Crafted with pride, inspired by heritage
The vakas (canoe) are Moko’s signature handcraft and the piece that has been transformed the most over the years. When he first started making vakas they were quite traditional in shape and style. Over time, they’ve developed into a sleeker, more modern look with new patterns and design features. The flower pattern shown here was a key element in his work during 2025.
The Katoua
Uniquely Niuean, the katoua (spear) is a strong symbol of Niuean culture and identity. Today, it’s most often seen in the takalo, our traditional war dance, or gifted on important occasions.
As previously mentioned, Moko started making mini katouas in 2021. The original ones he made were much wider. Since then, he has redesigned and refined them several times, improving their shape, balance and overall look. The mini katouas have become a popular part of his collection, especially for people wanting a smaller piece of Niuean culture to display or gift.
A legacy of inspiration and skill
In 2024, Moko started making pendants, and the first set he created were miniature katoua (see home page for image).
Since then, he has made several different variations. The set on the left is his most recent pendant design, featuring miniature pake kilikiki (cricket bat) with different village colours.
